For the love of wine

“A wine is like a song – it has to tell a story. This is why I named my wines after my biggest hits”, says STING, touching the hearts of his music and wine fans. Il Palagio – is the name of this special place with wonderful vineyards and olive groves, two lakes, grain fields, and wooded hills – that has become the magical domain for the organic and biodynamic production of STING’s wines.

Our Winery

The History

The Tenuta Il Palagio has always been cultivated. In the late 17th century, the Martelli family acquired the estate. In 1819, it was sold to the Countess Carlotta Barbolani of Montauto, the widow of the Duke of San Clemente; the property remained in the family for the next 150 years. At the beginning of the 20th century, Duke Simone Vincenzo Velluti Zati di San Clemente completed numerous construction projects, including the building of the granary, an oil mill, and the creation of vineyards. When Sting and Trudie came to the estate for the first time in 1999, it was in a state of deterioration. They immediately began renovating the buildings and properties and successfully restored the estate to the splendor and beauty of its glorious former time.

STING organic bonbons

Handmade organic bonbons created with red wine by rock legend Sting
Sting found a new passion in Tuscany: the Il Palagio vineyard. He runs it together with his wife Trudie, having converted it to biodynamic wine cultivation. Wines are like music to him and that’s why he has named them after his songs. Experience Sting‘s firstrate organic red wine SISTER MOON in a chocolate ganache made from milk and dark chocolates. Added are a little blackcurrant couverture and a dash of grappa and everything comes enveloped in a dark chocolate ball with a candy-sweet caramel couverture coat.

Wine Country – Tuscany

One of the most renowned wine-producing areas in the world stretches along the Lingurian coast of Italy: Tuscany. The region, with its capital Florence, belongs to the network of Great Wine Capitals, into which only one wine-growing area per country is accepted. Virtually ideal geological and climatic conditions afford wineries located here the production of high-end wines with extraordinary, unique undertones. Blessed with lots of sunshine, yet still provided with sufficient rain, the Tuscan grapes planted in the barren limestone soil produce these special wines, beloved by enthusiasts everywhere.

In Tuscany, approx. 65,000 hectares of land are dedicated to grape cultivation. The vineyards reach from the Mediterranean coast in the west of the region to the hills of the Apennine Mountains to the north and east; the south includes a stretch of land called Maremma, which extends to Latium. The majority of vineyards, approx. two thirds, are located in hills at an elevation between 100 and 500 meters above sea level.

IMPORTANT GRAPE VARIETIES

The main grape variety of Tuscany is undoubtedly the Sangiovese. It is the most important grape variety for Chianti and one of its variants, the Sangiovese Grosso or also the Brunello, is used to make Brunello di Montalcino, one of the most renowned wines of Italy. A clone of the Sangiovese grape is also used for the Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, in this case, the grape variety Prugnollo Gentile. Canaiolo and Merlot are also represented in the region, as well as Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc since the rise of the Super Tuscans. The white grape varieties include predominantly Vernaccia, Trebbiano and Malvasia, but also Vermentino, and, increasingly, Chardonnay.
